We have two patio lights which were poorly designed, and make changing bulbs a pain. Thus the need for a long life bulb. The lighting is primarily used to gently light the area at night for security purposes. These bulbs are fine for that. They aren't as bright as a standard 40W bulb, and the color of the light is a little warmer, but not unpleasantly so. If you need quite a bit of light, go with a higher wattage bulb. I was ready to pass them up when I first saw that the bulb was $2.49 plus $9.95 shipping, but then I discovered that when I purchased 4 bulbs the shipping stayed the same. That's a big difference between $12.48 per bulb or $4.98 per bulb. Still expensive, but at our rate of use these bulbs should last us over 4 years without having to mess around changing them. If they really do, then they'll be worth the money. Gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because of the high shipping costs. Also not eligible for Amazon Prime.
