TCP 48905 - 5 Watt Compact Fluorescent Spiral, 2700K Review

These turned out to be the perfect bulbs for a new three-bulb fixture we put into a bathroom we just remodeled! See the pictures I uploaded.

We don't like harsh bright light in the morning when we flip on the bathroom light (does anyone?), and the 9-10W "40W replacement" CFLs turned out to be way too bright in this case. After the fact, I noticed that the packaging said those were 600 lumens compared to 465 lumens for a typical 40W incandescent, which seems silly to me if they are supposed to be equivalent. We are actually quite happy with 9W CFLs in a *five* light fixture with deeper glass shades in another bathroom with darker walls, but this bathroom has lighter walls and shallower glass shades, so those lumens really made us squint.

After some experimentation, we estimated we wanted something in the range of 200-300 lumens per bulb and couldn't find anything like that locally that wasn't incandescent. We couldn't find any LED bulbs in that range at all, and this bulb seemed the best available CFL option online. eLightbulbs through Amazon was among the best, if not the actual best, total cost option including shipping. I got the shipment the day before the estimated delivery range despite the "takes 2-3 days to process" note. Package was in fine shape, bulbs all fired right up, and we're both very pleased with the soft white light!

These bulbs are much shorter than standard CFLs so are good for places where you might want to have a bulb "tucked in" somewhere so you can't see the curlicues so much. They hide nicely in the short glass shades of the light fixture we're using. They do have a slightly wider base than some CFLs and standard bulbs so might have width clearance issue in very tight spots but that wasn't an issue for us. Just check the dimensions (see the web for the mfg part number if you have to) and be sure these are bright enough for your application! Their brightness is somewhere between 25W and 40W incandescent bulbs, probably closer to 40W but slightly dimmer. To my eyes, they seem to come on at near full brightness and only brighten slightly as they warm up.

Overall very happy with this purchase! Thanks!
